Walter E. "Wally" Westedt, of Belvidere, IL, died Midnight, September 29th, at home while surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer .
Born May 16th, 1922, in Hill Point, WI, the son of Henry and Helena (Meyer) Westedt, he was raised on a small dairy farm in rural Wisconsin and graduated from Reedsburg High School in 1941. Wally then served in the U.S. Navy during WWII (1942-1946) on the destroyer USS Sigsbee in the South Pacific. Upon returning from the service, he attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison and received the Bachelors of Business Administration degree in Accounting.
His career began as office manager of Teck’s Ice Cream Company in Middleton, WI where he met Lois Hansen - his wife of 53 years. Wally and Lois married on September 17th, 1949 in Merrimac, WI and shared three children. Wally’s career switched to banking and lasted 35 years - coming to Belvidere, IL in 1966 as President of the First National Bank and Trust Company (now National City Bank), retiring May 16, 1984.
In semi-retirement, Wally prepared tax returns for a local CPA firm.
Accomplishments outside the office included receiving the Doctor of Civic Betterment Award (1992), co-founding the Belvidere Chapter of SCORE, and serving many civic organizations - Rotary International (past President), Belvidere Sister Cities, Belvidere Chamber of Commerce, Boone County Heart Fund, Highland Hospital Board, VFW, and American Legion. Wally was instrumental in raising funds to remove Belvidere parking meters 10 years ahead of schedule (1974).
Wally is survived by his wife Lois; children, Linda (Ray) Melby of Beloit, WI, Wayne Westedt of Rockford, and Jill Michels of Winnebago; grandchildren, Travis, Jessica, Michelle and David; sister, Lillian Venden of Hopewell Junction, NY, brothers, Erich (Marie) of Loganville, WI, Paul (Audrey) and Vern (Tina) of Reedsburg, WI. He also leaves many nieces, nephews and lifelong cherished friends.
Walter has donated his body to medical science. A Memorial Service will be held at Buck-Wheeler-Hyland Funeral Home, 218 West Hurlbut Avenue, Belvidere, IL, on Sunday, October 6 at 1:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers a Memorial Fund has been established to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Dad will remain with us in our hearts and thoughts everyday.
Webmaster's Note: Walter E. Westedt enlisted in the US Navy November 21, 1942 at Milwaukee, WI. He reported aboard the USS Sigsbee December 20, 1943 at Pearl Harbor, HI. Wally attained the rating of Quarter Master 2/C. He was transferred January 3, 1946 to the Receiving Station at Charleston, SC, for further transfer
to the Separation Center at Great Lakes, IL for discharge.
