UNDERSTANDING CREW MUSTER AND MUSTER ROLLS OF THE USS SIGSBEE DD-502 COMMISSIONING CREW, JANUARY 23, 1943
Normally all hands muster on the ship by divisions at 0800 except those on watch. Each Division roll caller has a list of crewmen who are on watch. When a man is lost overboard all crewmen are mustered on station immediately to determine who is missing or unaccounted for. Muster Rolls were printed quarterly and a Report of Changes from port to port, within the quarter, were printed listing straglers, absent over leave, change in rate, received and transferred crewmen, etc.
When a crewman was received on the DD-502 his name did not show on the Muster Roll until the following day when he answered his first roll call.
The Muster Rolls for the USS Sigsbee Commissioning, January 23,1943 list the crew at muster 0800 on that day, January 23, and five crewmen at 0800 musters through January 26, 1943. This was the Commissioning (plank owners) crew, published 3/8/43 and included the following crewmen:
