Paul Huber passes away

Longtime educator and former Douglas Mayor Paul Huber died on December 20, 2005. He was 80.

Paul Huber was born on July 6, 1925 in Minomonie, Wisconsin.

He came to Douglas when he was three-weeks-old with his parents Paul Sr. and Josephine. Paul attended Douglas schools and graduated from Douglas High School at the age of sixteen.

In February 1943 he joined the Navy. Paul was a sonarman during WW II on the destroyer USS Sigsbee. The USS Sigsbee was hit by a Japanese kamikaze on April 14, 1945. Paul was discharged from the navy in March of 1946 and returned to Douglas.

At the time, he attended the University of Arizona and helped out in the family print shop the "Sun Press". In 1949 he married a local Douglas woman, Dorothy Benson. He also joined the Naval reserve that year.

Paul entered public office in 1960 as a member of the Mayors planning council. He was elected Alderman from Ward 6 in 1962 and held that position until 1968 when he won his first mayoral election. He served as mayor until 1974.

In 1971 Paul returned to the University of Arizona and received a Bachelor's of Arts in Public Administration in 1972 and graduate work in education. He began his teaching career in 1974 at Douglas Junior High and continued teaching until his retirement in 1989.

Huber was appointed Alderman in Ward 6 in 1986, served until the end of the term in 1988.

He was named Judge pro tem in August of 1995 and served in that capacity until December 1999.

Huber was also a member of the Douglas Historical Society and served as president; member of the Saint Luke's Church, Knights of Columbus, The American Legion and the Elks Lodge.

Huber and his wife had six children, Kathy Huber (Wayne Burgson) of Fresno CA, Pat (Gary) Gunsolley of Bishop CA, Chris Elzy of Tucson, AZ, Marian Huber (Jim Wallace) of Tucson, AZ, Cecelia (Bill) Risius of Tempe, AZ and Joe Huber of San Diego, CA. Paul has 6 grand children, David Elzy, Annette Strange, Monique Elzy, James Huber, Amber Risius, Dereck Risius and 7 great grand children Michael, Stephen and Katlin Vass, Breanna and Anesia Strange and Reyna and Anthony Elzy.

Webmaster's Notes: Paul Kennedy Huber Jr, S2c, Service #735 61 04, was received aboard the USS Sigsbee DD-502 December 2, 1944 at San Francisco, CA. Paul served aboard the USS Sigsbee DD-502 16 months and advanced in rating to SoM3c. He was transferred April 2, 1946 to RS Charleston, SC, FFT to Separation Center Charleston, SC for discharge. Paul enjoyed the USS Sigsbee Reunions, both East and West Coast. After his first Sigsbee reunion at Sacramento, Paul was always accompanied by his loving family. They attended both the 2003 Christening and the 2004 Commissioning of the USS Chung-Hoon DDG 93 at Pascagoula, MS and Pearl Harbor, HI. Paul will be missed by his many friends and shipmates. He was a Great Man and a dear friend. Our thoughts and prayers go out for his family.
