GALENA, Kan. Addie K. Brown, age 89, 1818 North Stateline Road, died at 3 a.m., Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Emerald Pointe Nursing Home, Galena, following an illness.

Addie was born Feb. 26, 1915, in rural Webb City, Mo. His parents were Abraham Lincoln and Sarah Elizabeth (Dove) Brown. He had lived in this area all of his life. He graduated from Riverton High School in 1934. He worked for the Kansas State Telephone Company for 30 years. He retired in 1977 as a cable splicer. He attended McKinley Avenue Baptist Church, Joplin. He was a member of the union Chapel Community Club. He had served on the school boards of Central City, Mo., and later Carl Junction, Mo. He was very knowledgeable in wildlife, gardening, and horses. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Sigsbee. He was stationed in the Pacific Theatre from 1943 to 1945 and fought in nine major battles.

He was married to Betty Mae Hensley on Sept. 10, 1949, at Keelville, Kan. She survives.

Additional survivors include two sons, Thomas and wife, Karen Brown, Joplin, and Paul and wife, Patty Brown, St Louis, Mo.; three daughters, Ruth and husband, Levi Gandy, Carl Junction, Judy and husband, Edward Baker II, Riverton, Kan., and Barbara and husband, Donald Honeywell, Galena; one sister, Mary Jane Watson, Joplin; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Allen Brown in 1967; and eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m, Friday, June 11, at McKinley Avenue Baptist Church, Joplin. Pastor Keith Brumfield will officiate. Mary Robinson will deliver a Eulogy. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena. Military graveside rites will be conducted. The pallbearers will be Matt Gandy, Darren Needham, Edward Baker III, James Kirk Brown, Ben Beauchamp, David Gandy and Adam Brown.The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 10, at Derfelt Funeral Home, Galena.

 Webmaster's Notes: Addie Kirk Brown, service # 866 74 98, enlisted in the US Navy August 9, 1943 at Columbus, OH.  He was received aboard the USS Sigsbee DD-502 as F3c January 5, 1944 from ComDesPac Flag at Pearl Harbor, HI.  Addie K. Brown attained the rating of MM3c May 1, 1945. He was last listed on the July 1, 1945 Muster Roll.  He was probably transferred from the USS Sigsbee in the fall of 1945.  Our Muster Roll records are vague for  August - December, 1945.
